How experience is earned
The usual approach gives a small, slightly random amount of XP per message, with a cooldown, for example one minute, so sending many messages in a row does not count for more. You can also give XP for time in voice channels or for joining events, and exclude channels where you do not want to reward activity, like the commands channel.

The level curve
Each level should cost a little more than the last. That way the first levels come fast, which hooks newcomers, and the high ones mean something. If the curve is too flat, everyone hits the top level in a few weeks; if it is too steep, almost nobody gets past the first few.

Rewards that work
A level only motivates if it brings something. The most common rewards are:
- 1Roles with their own color or name at specific levels.
- 2Access to exclusive channels or giveaways.
- 3Extra permissions, like posting images or changing nickname.
- 4Coins from the server economy, if it has one.
Public bot or custom bot
A public bot is set up in minutes and is fine to start. A custom bot makes sense when you want your own rules, like XP for voice, events or tasks, level cards with your brand’s design, or levels tied to the server’s economy and minigames.
